SAWE Los Angeles Chapter Meeting Minutes (May 13, 2023)

SAWE LA Chapter Business Meeting:

Lawrence called the meeting to order @ 1:24 PM and read the April 22nd virtual meeting minutes.

  1. Yi-Ling said she forwarded the list of new 2023-2024 Los Angeles Chapter officers to SAWE International

  • Chapter Checking Account Update:

  •    John Nakai has an open action to e-mail a copy of the approved meeting minutes for bank review prior to the next in-person appointment.
  • XXXXXXXX have an open action to set up an in-person appointment at the bank to update the authorized account users and account mailing address. (Names redacted upon request.)
  • The current checking account balance is $XXXX (Budget redacted, available on request)
  • Membership: Annual SAWE membership renewals are due April 30th and memberships are considered “in arrears” if not renewed by June 1st. To renew your membership, go to www.sawe.org and click Join/Renew.

The LA Chapter normally pays membership fees for chapter officers directly to SAWE International, but Yi-Ling reaffirmed that each officer needs to renew their dues individually (per Bill Boze direction) and reimbursements will be provided at the next chapter meeting. Mike Notarangelo, Yi-Ling Tam, and Lawrence Cruz have already renewed their memberships and were issued reimbursement checks. There are 24 current members in the LA Chapter.

  • SAWE will waive the partial year membership dues paid by Miguel Espinoza-Bazan who recently became a new member.
  • West Coast SAWE International Conference Proposal  
  • LA Chapter has been asked to explore hosting a future international conference
  • Kevin Tharp (Director of the Mojave Chapter) said he will discuss with his chapter and added that they would be willing to help, but not co-host  
  • DJ Feldman is the “go to” person for arranging SAWE conferences and can provide hotel leads  
  • Richard Manning volunteered to head up an exploratory committee which will also include Dan Rowley and John Hargrave
  • Need to find corporate sponsors
  • LA Chapter is not to commit to anything at this time and a decision will be made later this year
  • Professor Mustafa & New Mexico student chapter volunteered to host a conference (need more info) 
  • John Hargrave will report to BOD that LA Chapter will explore hosting a future conference
  • LA Chapter Project discussion – Suggestions include:
  • Improve communication (Bring up SAWE events at staff meetings, publicize SAWE member forums, chapter newsletter)
  • Grow LA Chapter membership (recruit fellow co-workers, promote benefits such as mentor program, reach out to other companies)
  • Sponsor LA Chapter Scholarship for member families (Lawrence will re-post scholarship info)
  • We received notification that the SAWE Arizona Chapter is closing, and several members will transfer to the LA Chapter. We plan to invite the former Arizona chapter members to the next LA Chapter Zoom meeting
  • Lawrence announced that the next LA Chapter meeting will be virtual (Zoom) at 10:00 AM Saturday, June 17, followed by another Zoom meeting in July (TBD) and perhaps another meeting (in-person?) in August.

  • Yi-Ling discussed proposed changes to RPA3/RFP Contract deliverable descriptions in DID, MIL-STD 881F & Aerospace preference to receive digital (Excel based) mass properties inputs.
