Abstract
A Belgian industrial company, Winner scs, supported by the Walloon Region, has charged our service at the Free University of Brussels (ULB) to design a two seat helicopter powered by a small kerosene-fueled turboshaft engine based on their previous piston driven single seat helicopter. The helicopter is intended to be used mainly for training purposes but also for leisure flight. It would be certified in the CNSK category issued by the French DGAC. The final product must be a low cost option for potential helicopter customers. In order to reduce cost and complexity, the transmission system of the helicopter needs to be very simple and robust. Its weight should be minimized for optimum helicopter performance without compromising safety. This paper describes the considered transmission system architecture and elucidates its weight estimation with the several aspects involved. Since the helicopter design parameters are continuously evolving, a parametric approach will be used throughout this paper.
