Chandler, Gottfried: 3253. Intumescent Coatings: a Lighter Weight Way to Improve the Fire Resistance of ‘FIBROUS’ Structural Bulkhead Insulation. 2002.

Abstract

Structural insulations are used on marine bulkheads and decks to keep the fire in one compartment from spreading to an adjacent space. An intumescent coating placed on the outside of fibrous insulation will significantly reduce the quantity and weight of insulation required when compared to uncoated insulation. The coating is effective when the fire exposure is the standard time-temperature curve and the more severe hydrocarbon time-temperature curve.
