Ray Schumacher: 3141. Frame Design Parameters and Techniques Applied In SAE’s Collegiate Mini Baja Competition. 2001.

Abstract

Designing and building a vehicle that can withstand the punishment of off-road competition requires experience and knowledge of what works. Simple, strong, lightweight design is usually the best approach but is not always easy to achieve. The SAE Mini Baja competition challenges young student engineers to design and build a four-wheel off-road vehicle that is durable enough to survive a punishing four-hour endurance event where most teams never finish.
This paper presents the approach, techniques, and regulations applied to the design and fabrication of the frame for the 2000 Long Beach State Mini Baja. The end result was a design that combined the lessons learned from the previous year with simple, reliable, existing applications. The 2000 Long Beach State team placed 6th overall against 86 other vehicles and placed 1st in the dynamic competition in only their second year of competition.
