Abstract
Logically, accuracy is an absolute requirement, and time is a limiting factor. But the well worn comment, ”there’s never time to do it right, but there’s always time to do it over,” does often ring true. In any case, speed and accuracy are essential elements of our job performance. So, how is one, especially an advanced design weight engineer, to reconcile the conflict of achieving reasonable accuracy versus the obligation of meeting a tight schedule? There are at least three solutions: One is, work late nights and long weekends. Alternately, hope that your supervisors and project managers are understanding types, who are not critical of frequent errors. A third approach is to develop rapid estimation/checking methods (REMs) that are fast yet reasonably accurate. If you prefer the latter choice, this paper will be of interest to you.
