Abstract

Advances in electronics and competition in the marketplace have allowed engineering firms to utilize the time saving and computing powers of personal computers. In addition, more companies have CADAM terminals on nearly every design engineer’s desk alongside main frame access terminals. This paper outlines a method combining the power of CADAM, the mainframe, the personal computer, and word processing in a vertical integration process. The mass properties portion of the analysis function of CADAM is utilized to calculate all mass property data on the engineering design. This data is transferred to the main frame computer to be utilized in the weight and balance programs for database management. From there, the data is downloaded to the personal computer to generate the necessary weight and balance reports, then uploaded to the word processor in its final form for management review. This system of data management fully utilizes many of the tools now available in engineering firms as well as reducing hand calculation and report writing. In addition, more information with greater accuracy is available in much less time to other respective engineering groups. Any company now using CADAM, a main frame system, PC’s , and a word processing system can benefit.
