Abstract

The Automated Mass Properties System (AMPS) has been developed as a tool for calculating the mass properties of detail parts from CAD/CAM wire frame models. The program calculates weights, CG’s, and moments of inertia of three dimensional wire frame objects. It combines the weight engineer’s experience in an interactive environment with the speed and accuracy of the computer. The result is a highly flexible tool which allows mass properties calculations on even the most crudely defined models. The ability of AMPS to allow weight engineers to calculate mass properties at the design level provides an invaluable tool for the weight engineering discipline. This paper describes how calculations are performed through interactive user input.
