Abstract
Data from the weight growth histories of previous space vehicles can be used by the weight engineer and project management during the design and acquisition phase of a new program to help predict and control the new vehicle weight growth. This paper discusses the weight growth histories of eighteen space vehicles and their associated subsystems to determine typical weight growth characteristics. The result indicates that the nature of the typical weight growth curve is different from the ?S? shaped curve assumed by some weight engineers in earlier years of the space program. A typical, or average, space vehicle weight growth curve is presented, along with suggestions for using this curve as a tool in helping to predict and control the new vehicle weight growth.
