Abstract

Generalized relationships are derived to analyze the cost effectiveness of weight reduction obtained by substitution of an advanced material of reduced density with no change in dimensions. These cost effectiveness relationships are applied to a preliminary assessment of aluminum-lithium on an advanced derivative of the MD-80 transport aircraft. This parametric method provides a greater visibility on the material cost considerations than a case-by-case approach, but it is necessary that nonrecurring costs be omitted. Primary attention is focused on quantifying the economic benefit to be obtained by incorporating aluminum-lithium and identifying the cost effective product forms. material utilization is a critical consideration in the cost effectiveness analysis since the scrap on the shop floor does not reduce the weight of the airplane. To obtain a better understanding of this parameter, seventy production aircraft components that are fabricated from plate, sheet, extrusions, conventional forgings, and precision forgings are analyzed with regard to their material utilization.
