Abstract

A weight estimate for the SAAB-JA-37 Viggen Advanced Composite Vertical Stabilizer was performed using the results obtained from FASTOP, a finite element analysis for aerosurface structures where combined strength and flutter speed requirements are present. A description of FASTOP’s integrated interdisciplinary analysis and modeling process is included. The weight estimating procedure involved the interpretation of theoretical model element and member weights and the application of the appropriate non-optimum factors to project realistic component and assembly weights. The correlation of the factored finite element weights and the drawing-calculated weight for covers was good. Correlation was .satisfactory for spars; however, ribs require more study.
