Abstract

The advent of the new composite technology is creating a revolution in materials consideration for
advanced weapon system design. Since the driving force behind American industry is profit, a natural
question concerning the application of composite materials is, ‘How much does it cost?’ This paper
presents an approach to forecasting the cost of constructing components out of composite materials
during the preliminary design stage of a weapon system. The results of the analysis can be used to
determine the most-effective approach through sensitivity analysis. The validity of the approach is
enhanced by comparisons to cost and weight predictions of related programs.
