Abstract
The Navy’s ‘Sea Based Air Master Study’ design guidelines of a V/STOL Type A aircraft requires an approach of reducing the weight of the aircraft by advancing the technologies of systems, materials, propulsion and fuel consumption. This paper explores the need for these advanced technologies, the rewards of achieving them, and the risks associated with not realizing the level predicted, and concludes that a V/STOL aircraft can be designed and built to meet these guidelines providing technical advancement is achieved in all these areas of aircraft development.
