Abstract
A brief review of the airframe structural weight fraction is presented in the perspective of historical trends over the past six decades, and its forecast for the next two. Also discussed are the definition, importance, use and limitation in the aircraft design and evaluation process.
A trend study indicated that the structural weight fraction has not decreased significantly with time notwithstanding various technology improvements. The ever-increasing performance demands have resulted in aircraft shapes and component geometries, which have partially offset weight savings otherwise possible from the application of advanced material and structural design technologies.
