Abstract
The introduction of new materials into service is usually accompanied by technical surprises that are unwanted and unpleasant. Metals technology is presumed to be sufficiently mature that there should be few additional surprises. However, it is probable that further exploitation of advanced composites and the application of other new nonmetallic materials will encounter further surprises. A compilation of lessons and observations acquired over two decades of experience with the development, application, and maintenance of nonmetallic materials is presented to help reduce unwanted surprises. A number of unexpected benefits obtained from the application of new materials are also identified.
