Abstract
Practical considerations in advanced composite designs based on MCAIR experience are provided. Some of the advantages of composites to offset new emphasis on ‘design drivers’ that tend to increase weight are noted. Production type composite applications on MCAIR aircraft are illustrated along with a weight comparison. Some of the considerations for using or not using composites in actual production parts are described. It is predicted that advanced designs such as V/STOL will sorely need a ‘large dose’ of composites, but they must be judiciously selected and designed.
