Abstract

This paper emphasizes weight effects associated with propulsion system cycle and design parameters, multi-mission commonality and advanced materials usage. Vought’s V-530 Tandem Fan concept is used as the comparison basis.
Technology developments shown to be key to V/STOL Type A system development include:
– Extensive application potential for advanced composite structural components throughout the airframe and in selected propulsion system components.
– Lift/cruise fan technology for both thrust and vehicle control.
– Avionics technology developments in Large Scale Integrated Circuitry, conformal antennas and information processing.
