M Desloire: 1253. Prevision and Monitoring of Weight During Development of the Ariane Launcher. 1978.

Abstract

The avoidance of unnecessary risk was a prime consideration in the design, of the Ariane Launcher. This consideration excluded the use of certain advanced technologies during the development of the Launcher. However, to obtain a good payload capability it was necessary to have an optimum concept in terms of mass. After that, to maintain and to increase this capability it was necessary to, monitor carefully the mass of each item.
The paper presents:
Firstly, the principles of design for a low weight:
– use of small safety coefficient
– use of high strength/density ratio materials
– use of certain technologies
– use of advanced stress analysis
Then, the principles used to monitor the mass
Finally, some examples giving the mass and size of various items.
