Abstract

This paper presents the weight, stability, and subdivision considerations that were instrumental in the development of the General Purpose Amphibious Assault Ship, LHA-1 Class, design configuration.
Criteria for stability and reserve buoyancy conflicted with the unique cargo arrangement requirements. The definition of the water tight envelope resulted from various analyses which arrived at a design solution providing an acceptable ship with minimum impact on cargo stowage and handling. The paper describes how the criteria were satisfied and the analyses that were conducted to define the key dimensional constraints.
The success of the ship concept itself was dependent upon valid initial estimates of displacement and center of gravity. Early adverse trends in the transverse center of gravity required major design changes; fortunately, these changes were accomplished in the concept design phase.
