1178. Design Problems Associated With the B-1 Composite Horizontal Stabilizer. 1977.
Abstract
During the design of the B-1 Composite Horizontal Stabilizer, design problems were identified in the early stages of the program by a series of coupon and element tests. The remedial action invariably involved weight penalties, however, through a program of weight optimization and control, the target weight was achieved. The stabilizer was successfully static and fatigue tested with failure occurring at 132% of ultimate design load.
