Richard Boynton: 1169. Techniques for Improving Center of Gravity Measurement Accuracy. 1977.

Abstract

This paper outlines the common methods for measuring CG and estimates the error of measurement for each method. Two techniques are presented which virtually eliminate the major sources of CG measurement error, resulting in accuracies as great as 0.0005 inch. Both these methods involve rotation of the test object and use moment sensing devices whose compliance is 10 times less than conventionally employed.
Detailed descriptions are given of some commercially available center of gravity instruments which represent the state of the art as far as accuracy and conveniences are concerned.
