Abstract

The formulation, presentation and use of Operational Mass Properties data for today’s military aircraft often requires approaches which differ considerably from yesterday’s ‘Standard’ Tow cases in point are the variable sweep aircraft and the ejectable crew module (essentially an aircraft within an aircraft).
This paper discusses the problems which were encountered with an aircraft having both of the above features. Specific areas of discussion include:
– Equipment Inventory – The advantages of including greater detail and illustrations to minimize errors in basic weight accounting.
– Aircraft Weighing – The advantages/disadvantages of using the ‘block weighing’ concept at the operational level. A realistic look at aircraft weighing/re-weighing requirements. One approach to accountability of scheduled/unscheduled weight growth and CG effect.
– The Ejectable Crew Module – Derivation of the CG in 3-Axis. The advantages of using illustrations to depict equipment location (s). How illustrations use with tabular data, lessen the probability of erroneous aircraft loading.
– General Loading Data – Understanding the external loading CG effect with the variable sweep wing. How illustrations used with tabular data, lessen the probability of erroneous aircraft loading.
– Personnel – The advantages derived by classroom instruction to contractor and operational personnel in specific airplane weight and balance techniques. The most frequently committed errors in the maintenance of weight and balance records. What information will best serve the customer’s need in the future?
