Abstract

During the past 20 years the U.S. traveler has come to rely on air transportation to provide a means of rapid, safe, reliable, and comfortable travel as never before possible. This period of rapid growth in air transportation was assisted by our abundant supply of cheap petroleum fuel. While fuel efficiency was important at pre ”energy crisis’ prices, it has now become one of the major objectives. This paper presents results from some recent studies of air transportation energy efficiency alternatives and discusses some of the implications of these alternatives. The fuel conservation alternatives considered include aircraft operation, aircraft modification, derivative aircraft, and new aircraft.
