Abstract

When introducing the B747 into airline service the question arouse if the formerly used weight was also feasible for this aircraft.
We as an airline had to find a practicable way to determine the empty weight and to calibrate the onboard weighing equipment (OBAWS). We also had to consider the economical aspects of both the manpower for the weighing procedure and the price for a new equipment which also should be able to determine the accuracy of the OBAWS.
This paper now gives a description of the weighings using loadcells and the mobile electronic weighing system (MEWS) and the achieved results.
