Abstract

Two of the most difficult problems for the weights engineer are (1) bridging the gap between drawings or sketches of parts or assemblies and their mass properties in a form ready for computer programs to summarize according to configuration, functional or sequential keys, and (2) checking these mass properties without requiring independent manual repetition of the calculations, a process that doubles costs. The engineering tool, COMP (acronym for Calculation and Orientation of Mass Properties), described in this paper represents a successfully implemented solution to these problems.
