Abstract

Aeroelastic analyses, even when carried out on a moderate level, seldom yield the rational and quick answers one needs in predesign. It is also known that many aircraft become airborne before useful conclusions may be drawn from an exhaustive analysis.
This paper discusses and presents several semi-empirical formulae and analytical procedures which may be employed in the predesign phase. Such formulae or procedures enable a designer to quickly check wing skin gages for torsional rigidity and the corresponding increase in wing weight. They also give the designer an insight as to the effect of geometric changes upon critical speeds or rigidity. A step-by-step method to check stiffness and weight is indicated. Numerous references are given.
