Abstract
The system of weights and measures commonly used in the United States is referred to as the English system or the U.S. Customary system. Both terms are correct since no legislative enactment or administrative recommendation has been made concerning the title to be used. ‘inch-pound,’ ‘foot-pound,’ ‘American,’ and ‘U.S. System’ have also been used. In an effort to make their reference clear, the Congress of the U.S. has recently used the term ‘common usage English inch-pound system!’ All refer to the same units and standard values. Basic units in this system are primarily the same as those that have been developed in England since Anglo-Saxon times. They were brought to the new world by the English and have been in continuous use here since. The National Bureau of Standards has tended to use the term ‘U.S. Customary.’ (a)
The term ‘English system’ will be used often herein since it is the one commonly employed by engineers and scientists in aerospace industries throughout the world. It must be noted that some of the basic units of this system are no longer used or legal in the United Kingdom. Other units used in the United Kingdom, primarily of volume, have a different standard value than their counterpart in the United States. The system, used in the United Kingdom, is called the Imperial system.
