Paper
Abstract
This paper was presented at the Twenty-second Annual National Conference of the Society of Aeronautical Weight Engineers at St. Louis, Missouri, April 29-May 1, 1963. The weight and balance group at American Airlines has, during the past year and a half, utilized the IBM 7070 computer in several divergent applications. The following selected programs illustrate typical tasks to which we have put the computer. It is significant that none of the programs required the talents of a programmer, but rather were written, in Fortran language, by engineers with no previous programming experience.
This paper describes some of the instance in weight and balance where we have found a computer useful and the programming techniques applied to achieve the desired results.
Four programs are explained:
1) Total Cargo Loads, IBM 1620
2) Weight Ledger Program, IBM 7070
3) Generalized Aircraft Loadability Analysis, IBM 7070
4) Effect of Passenger Frequency Distribution on Cargo Loads, IBM 7070
