Abstract
This paper was presented at the Twenty-second Annual National Conference of the Society of Aeronautical Weight Engineers at St. Louis, Missouri, April 29-May 1, 1963. The objective of this paper is familiarization with the weight aspects of the Stirling cycle engine.
The Stirling cycle is discussed from its conception by a Scottish minister in the nineteenth century through research and development in the twentieth century by Philips Gloelampenfabrieken Laboratories of Eindhoven, the Netherlands and Allison Division and General Motors research Laboratories of General Motors Corporation. An application of the Stirling engine to furnish auxiliary power in an orbital satellite is discussed including the design objectives: Minimum engine weight and minimum engine vibration.
