J H Davies: 331. Problems of Weight Control on the VC10. 1962.

Abstract

This paper was presented at the Twenty-first Annual National Conference of the Society of Aeronautical Weight Engineers at Seattle, Washington, May 14-17, 1962. This paper briefly sets out the background to the design of the VC10 tracing its development up to meet the final B.O.A.C. requirement s. The reasons behind the decision to go for a rear engine, high tail aircraft are discussed together with the weight penalties associated with these decisions and the advantages of the ‘clean’ wing. Some comparisons between wing engine and tall engine airfield performance are given.
The problem of achieving a correct balance for the B.O.A.C. aircraft together with the probable requirements of different operators is discussed. Our aims on the loadability of the aircraft are stated.
The paper states briefly the VC10 design organization and the manner in which the activities of the weight group were integrated with that organization. Diagrams showing the achieved weight curves for some components and the complete aircraft are presented. Growth in weight due to customer changes together with associated centre of gravity movement is discussed. The achieved balance picture is presented and the implications of that picture are outlined.
