Paper

G R Williams: 291. Optimization of Fluid Lines. 1961.

Abstract

This paper was presented at the Twentieth National Conference of the Society of Aeronautical Weight Engineers at Akron, Ohio, May 15 – 18, 1961. This paper presents a method developed for determining a fluid carrying line size with minimum inside diameter that will satisfy design requirements. The variation of flow properties between fluids is considered as well as the variation of the properties of each fluid with change in temperature.
Charts are presented that indicate the lightest weight hydraulic line satisfying the flow and strength requirements with consideration of temperature effects and both standard and non-standard sizes. Possible applications of the method are discussed and sample problems are presented.
