Abstract

This paper deals with tile optimum weight of the fibrous material required for the construction of an expandable structure having the form of a surface of revolution. A simple equation is derived, from which it is apparent that the optimized structural weight is independent of the specific geometric shape of the structure, and it depends only on the volume enclosed by the surface. The validity of the equation is illustrated by some simple examples. Finally a method of optimizing the structural weight of a torus is offered, and the validity of the equation is tested again.
