Abstract
The function of the structural index as an aid in making design choices for minimum weight is described, and several literature examples of its use are cited. Comparisons of a magnesium alloy, an aluminum alloy, and a titanium alloy are shown for the specific case of buckling and crippling of flat plates under short-time loading at elevated temperatures.
