Abstract

The problem of structural weight estimation is not new and in fact has been studied for many years by a great number of aircraft engineers. The method of approach and the results are the type most suited to the particular requirements of the individual and his immediate problem.
In this paper, expressions are shown for the derivation of airplane structural weight items. Special emphasis is made on the practical aspects of the estimation adapting equations to statistical data. The method is particularly useful for deriving weights during a generalized study or prior to a detailed study of a configuration. The derivation of the wing weight for a commercial transport is shown.
