Abstract

In order to meet the extreme requirements necessary for a high performance airplane such as the B-58, it was decided to make a new approach in the procurement of the aircraft. This method has been referred to by the Air force as the Weapon System Management Concept. This policy places in the hands of the airframe contractor not only the responsibility for delivering to the Air Force a complete airplane, but also a;; of its related ground equipment, training aids, spares, etc. Insofar as equipment is concerned, the policy places with Convair the necessity for finding, developing, buying and installing virtually all items that have been previously referred to as Government Furnished Aircraft Equipment.
This paper addresses the basic justification for resorting to Weapon System Management.
