C R McWhorter: 84. Consideration of Bending and Torsional Stiffness in the Design of Wings for Minimum Weight. 1953.

Abstract

Mr. E.P. MacDonough, Chief of Structures at Chance Vought Aircraft, has presented an article concerning a method for defining the optimum distribution of material within a wing to obtain a prescribed bending or torsional frequency. This article entitled ‘The Minimum Weight Design of Wings for Flutter Conditions’ will appear in an early issue of the IAS Journal, and is included as an appendix to this report to facilitate the necessary references.
The following paper is presented in an effort to expand on the basic principle suggested by Mr. MacDonough and to explore the practical applications of his theory as a new and useful tool for the Weight Control Engineer.
