Abstract

Non-redundant finite elements are used to analyze the initial buckling of isotropic skins with lands in compression, shear, and combined compression and shear. They are also used to analyze post-buckling of skins with lands in compression. The good news is that adding to the width or the thickness of a land increases the stress level at buckling. The bad news is that there is a weight penalty for wing covers that are critical in compression.
