Abstract

A method is developed and described for estimating the wing weights of tilt-rotor and tilt-wing aircraft. The method is appropriate for aircraft at a conceptual level of development. The method may be used to assess the effect of wing geometry and structural materials on wing weight. The method is similar for both aircraft concepts and is based on dynamically scaling the wing stiffness requirements using existing designs as a reference. In addition to the methodology discussion, results demonstrating the effect of geometry and material properties on wing weights are also presented.
