Abstract

Reducing vehicle weight can play a significant role in reducing fuel consumption, while simultaneously improving performance and handling. Magnesium, if it is utilized effectively and extensively, can contribute to major reductions in vehicle weight. The potential for reducing the weights of several types of vehicles is discussed. The paper shows the great potential for achieving major vehicle weight reductions, by taking a whole-vehicle approach to utilizing magnesium.
