Abstract

Efforts at ALCOA to enhance aluminum-based aerospace alloys for compression-dominated structures (i.e., upper wing and keel beam) have focused on increasing specific compressive strength while maintaining other important properties (i.e., fracture toughness and corrosion). These efforts are aimed at providing cost-effective weight reduction in strength-based designs. This paper presents a historical review of aluminum alloys utilized for compression-dominated structures, along with the disclosure of a ALCOA’s newly developed, high strength, 7XXX series aluminum alloy, 7055.
