Abstract
The Air Forces Project Forecast II proposes material and structural concept developments which would lead to a 50% airframe weight reduction for vehicles up to Mach 2.5 by the year 2000. Accurate weight assessment of hybrid designs incorporating these new technologies is needed. A study of the effect of advanced materials and structural concepts on future weight estimation at McDonnell Aircraft (MCAIR) was directly related to Project Forecast II initiatives. Scrutiny of MCAIR?s current structural weight estimation procedures highlighted areas where new techniques were needed. A framework for estimating structural weight at the detail subcomponent level was then developed. Advanced structural concepts and new manufacturing techniques such as Super Plastic Forming/Diffusion Bonding (SPF/DB) were also investigated to determine projected weight savings.
