Abstract

The objective of the airplane Center of Gravity and Fuel Level Advisory System (CG/FLAS) is to assist the flight crew in the control of aircraft balance during flight. It is intended for modified aircraft that are sensitive to balance because of the addition of fuselage fuel tanks, weapons bays, and wing mounted stores. The system concept was first demonstrated by installing an engineering model of the CG/FLAS in a U.S. Air Force B-52 bomber simulator for Air Force evaluation. Strategic Air Command crews ‘flew’ the simulator using the system to control the aircraft’s balance, and it proved conducive to reducing crew workload, enhancing safety, and extending the bomber’s operational capability. The Air Force has procured the system for installation in all B-52 aircraft.
