Abstract

With advances in counter-rotating, unducted propfan propulsion technology, and accurate and rapid method of estimating the fuselage weight penalty due to suppression of external noise generated by propfans is needed to support initial aircraft design. Such a method for use in the preliminary/conceptual design phase is presented in this paper. This method predicts the fuselage weight penalty based upon specific air vehicle configuration data, acoustic phenomena, and mission requirements. The noise level is analytically determined at discrete fuselage panel locations over the entire fuselage, and the total weight penalty is the sum of the delta weights calculated for these individual panels. Use and application of input parameters are discussed and examples showing the sound pressure level patterns on the fuselage surface for different longitudinal engine locations are shown.
