Abstract

Filling a hollow cavity with epoxy-coated macrospheres has been demonstrated to be an effective and mass efficient means of reinforcing a tubular like structural member. This unique method of reinforcement applies to any structural member with an offset or joint. Stiffness and strength of a body joint or a notched section can be appreciably improved by eliminating local section instabilities. Energy absorption is also improved by preventing premature section collapse during large or gross deflections. The system of using resin starved syntactic pellets such as macrospheres can be processed easier than foam when applied like blown in insulation. The porous honeycomb can be installed without the health hazards, process reliability and corrosion issues associated with foam installations.
