Richard Boynton, R Romano: 1609. Obtaining 3-Axis Static Balance of Gimbaled Seekers. 1984.

Abstract

This paper describes a method of automatically balancing gimbal mounted guidance seekers in their fully-assembled condition. The computer controlled instrument determines the unbalance about two or more axes and calculates the correction weights required to simultaneously balance the seeker about all axes. A printed record of unbalance is obtained. This method has been used successfully at a number of aerospace installations. The method is based on the measurement of the change in center of gravity which occurs when the test part is rotated about its bearings. Bearing friction and cable torque have no effect on measurement accuracy. Parts can be balanced to a tolerance as close a6 2 gm-cm.
