Abstract

Many new and unique technological challenges are encountered in the design and manufacture of advanced space
structures. Innovative new applications of mass properties engineering techniques are being used in response
to challenges associated with mass properties control. Stringent mass properties control requirements are driven
by the unique design requirements of advanced space structure applications. In response to these challenges,
General Dynamics Convair Division’s Mass Properties group has developed and implemented computerized mass
properties methodologies that are integrated with design and structural analysis techniques.
This documentation describes how our mass properties development and control methodologies are applied to
advanced space structures. Computerized techniques used to analyze and control mass properties of space
structures efficiently from preliminary design to production are discussed.
The architecture of our computerized mass properties analysis and control system is described. Advantages
derived by linking computerized mass properties, structural analysis, and design facilities into one integrated
system are summarized. Examples highlight the mass properties control applications of automated structural
analysis and design facilities. Benefits derived through sharing software capabilities with interrelated
engineering disciplines are also discussed.
