Abstract
Preliminary aircraft design ordinarily involves the use of computerized synthesis techniques. Vought’s Aircraft Synthesis Analysis Program (ASAP) is an excellent example of a sophisticated synthesis routine capable of optimizing design, performance and cost variables for select configurations.
Initial use of the programs such as ASAP requires preliminary estimation of the primary design and performance variables such as weight, wing area, fuel required, etc. The accuracy of the preliminary estimates can significantly reduce the design synthesis cycle.
This paper presents preliminary weight estimation methodology specifically developed to augment synthesis techniques such as ASAP. Two sample calculations are included. The first demonstrates a shore method only recommended for aircraft with payloads in excess of twenty-five percent of the take-off weight. A sub-sonic transport is used in this example. The second sample calculation demonstrates an expanded method which provides greater accuracy and can result in a complete group weight summary for balance calculations and improved cost analysis. The second method should be used if the payload is expected to be less than twenty-five percent of the take-off weight and is recommended for all applications where time allows. An advanced jet trainer is used as an example.
