Abstract

Conflicting requirements for broad depth parametric studies and rapid turnaround mandate a computerized Preliminary Design synthesis program. The required program must be simple yet flexible and responsive to changing design requirements. Input must be minimal while output must provide as much detail as possible. Grumman’s solution to these conflicting requirements was the development, by Weight’s personnel, of the Level One and Level Two Weight Integrated Sizing Evaluation (WISE) programs. Grumman has decided to select WISE to be the prime aircraft preliminary design tool. This paper describes how weight was used as the common denominator in developing WISE and some of the problems that occurred in its creation and use.
The degree of integration between the various pertinent technical disciplines is also discussed.
