Abstract
The weight control program on the CL-600 Challenger has been implemented by careful selection of materials to obtain a high specific strength. The airframe primary
structure is constructed from advanced aluminum alloys whereas secondary structural components are made of light weight composite materials. In a continuing effort to reduce weight and at the same time take advantage of manufacturing cost saving, a program has been instituted to develop composite primary structure. This paper discusses the materials selected for the Challenger structure and cabin furnishings, and also addresses the development work on graphite/epoxy.
