H Lankenau: 1258. Commonality of Aircraft Families as an Important Element of a ”Design-To-Cost” Strategy. 1978.

Abstract

During the last years the importance of aircraft cost was increasing due to high cost escalation rates caused by inflation and technology growth. Besides many other steps to stop this development, the commonality of air-craft families became an important cost reduction measure. Commonality enables the manufacturer to reduce the ‘Non Recurring Cost’ (NRC), but also the ‘Recurring Cost’ (RC). From the viewpoint of an operator the reduction of the spares’ holding cost is most essential.
The paper declares the different influences of Commonality and points out to which extent an NRC and RC reduction is possible. In addition, the financial risk of new programs depending on their Commonality is shown. Furthermore the effect of Commonality on the DOC (Direct Operating Cost) is analyzed, on the one hand as a benefit from aircraft and spares holding cost and on the other hand as possible weight and drag penalties.
