Abstract

Soon the 1980’s will herald a new era in space exploration. The high note will be the inaugural flight of the Space Shuttle transportation system, which should culminate in the establishment of a permanent orbiting space station. In support of these and other operations a complex network of communications and meteorological satellites must be established. These satellites fall into a unique class in that they function at geosynchronous altitudes to maintain their discrete position over the earth’s surface, orient their observation equipment, and hold antenna alignment. High performance propulsion systems, capable of reliably providing precise impulsive control over extended periods, are mandatory.
